Obtaining MRTG Network Statistics

What is MRTG?
The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing graphical images which provide a LIVE visual representation of this traffic.

At CalPoly we use MRTG as a tool to quickly and easily look at trend data for network related statistics over time.

You can see the stats we currently have for your building by selecting your building at the following site:

What can MRTG show me?
MRTG shows a graph of data it receives by asking network devices for specific information. It uses SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) which many network related devices support. Every 5 minutes our server will ask the network device for an update of whatever data that is being tracked. It then takes the data and makes a graph for easier readability.

Some things we graph using MRTG:

  • How busy a network link is. (Kilobytes or Megabytes per second)
  • How much Processor a Switch is using (CPU load)
  • How many errors/collisions are occurring over a network link (Per 5 minutes)

How can I get an MRTG for my area built?
There are MANY different parameters that can be graphed using MRTG, please let us know what you are looking to see statistically for the network devices that support your area and we will build the MRTG webpage for you. Please send this information to Network Administrations via a Remedy Ticket.

Refer to our Services Turn Around Time page for information about how long it will take to for your MRTG webpage to be created.
